Does Chinese Cheap Switcher are worth?

I’ve received many questions in my email about “Are cheap Chinese switchers worth it?”

I won’t discuss specific brands in this context, but rather their advantages and disadvantages.

From my perspective, both from a customer perspective and as a developer of third-party support devices, there are several factors that might be considered when choosing these switchers.

First, price:
Affordability. I remember back in school or college, when buying something, whether food or clothing, the first consideration was price, with taste coming second.

For beginner broadcasters, this is the number one reason.

Second, Expectations:
If it’s affordable, do the necessary features meet the broadcaster’s needs? For example, the primary needs of a beginner broadcaster are:

  • Number of camera inputs (HDMI)
  • Camera outputs with Program & Preview/multiview capabilities

Additional options include using a computer/media as a recording and/or streaming device, adding additional logos/titles/sources.

Secondary considerations are whether the switcher:

  • Can record independently
  • Can stream independently
  • Can support Picture-in-Picture/Multisource

Third, product quality. A common problem I’ve observed after using Chinese switchers is proper heat dissipation management. Overheating becomes a major issue when the switcher has core capabilities and additional options, overloading the device, resulting in excessive heat production. Heat dissipation and air circulation are challenges for designers and developers, similar to those between engineers and building contractors.

The reality is that using global products presents global challenges, particularly in terms of weather. If used in cold/rainy climates, a common problem is condensation; if used in hot weather, overheating is a tendency.

So, is it worth it? The answer is yes and no. Yes, if the manufacturer pays attention to user opinions by building a community so that real-time feedback serves as a benchmark. This doesn’t mean that users are forcing additional features to compete with high-end competitors, which, in my opinion, is a suicide mission. It’s more about fixing bugs and software defects, nothing more. Every price has its value. However, I say no to manufacturers that only focus on sales without any feedback listener, resulting in hardware updates instead of software updates.

My opinion above is merely an observation. There’s nothing wrong with buying cheap goods as long as we carefully consider the pros and cons.

However, one thing we need to consider is that China began as an assembly-line country, meaning they based their products on blueprints from companies seeking to mass-produce their products. Now, China has developed into a country capable of meeting your needs and demands. This isn’t limited to broadcasting; pharmaceuticals, which were once sourced exclusively from Europe or the USA, can now be produced in China. Not to mention the automotive, food, and clothing sectors.

30 years ago, China could only copy, but now it can create something original. It’s not impossible that in the next, say not 30 years in the future, 3-5 years from now, we will see affordable broadcast switchers with features and device quality that are on par with American, Australian, or Japanese products.

Truly, “The Dragon is waking from its slumber.”
